Battle of the Pelennor Fields

Dear Sauron,

Ithilien was originally under Gondor’s control until last June, when you and your forces took and occupied it! Rejoice! This began the War of the Ring. Our goal is to continue keeping Ithilien under your control. So I began preparations for the attack, which greatly pressed Minas Tirith.

We know that our subject, Frodo is out with your Ring, and meanwhile, this battle is now underway to protect him and fulfill the deeds and wills of our Enemy, restoring Ithilien. We don’t want that to happen! Frodo will pass through Ithilien, and initially find out that it is under our control. While you are in Frodo’s possession, I will start with a great fire, before having my Orcs, Oliphaunts, and Easterlings, “an army [of such size] had never issued from that vale since the days of Isildur’s might; no host so fell and strong in arms had yet assailed the fords of Anduin; and yet it was but one and not the greatest of the hosts that Mordor now sent forth.” (ROTK, “The Tower of Cirith Ungol”)

Meanwhile, we have two subjects that are determined to defeat the Witch King of Angmar. One of them is very peculiar, as she would be one of few (if not the only), female warrior in the largest battle of Middle-earth. In the War of the Ring, Éowyn had a desire to fight and die in battle. Éowyn wanted to face peril, do great deeds in battle, and to die in honor as a result. Our Enemy’s message is that courage is found in unlikely places, and as a result, the two subjects that will be defeating the Witch-King would be a hobbit and a female. However, I have convinced them both that this was just not possible due to their natures – much like I have convinced Frodo that he couldn’t take the Ring to Mordor or visit foreign subjects such as Elves or Dwarves.

For instance, we are all about lies. Merry – he knows that his friend is out there taking the Ring to Mordor! Our Enemy knows that all the members of the Fellowship each have different but productive roles, which we want them to forget! Éowyn saw how people were honored when they fought hard in battle, and pointed it out and said, “I want that.” In her society, glory and honor is bestowed in battle. Faramir, like some people in Middle-earth, believes that war is an ugly necessity, but it is not the only thing that is valuable. However, I got Saruman using Grima Wormtongue in order to mess with Éowyn’s mind about war. We are all about war. Our goal is to create destruction and chaos for our own glory, together with the Haradrim, as well as our servants, you, Saruman, and Wormtongue.

The truth of the matter is that when Théoden prepared the ride to battle himself, his door warden, Hama, suggested Éowyn to be a leader for the people of his absence, because she was fearless and all loved her. But we don’t want her to know this! Thankfully, I got Saruman using Grima Wormtongue to control Theoden, so they got to mess with her mind. When Éowyn saw Aragorn and other male subjects marching out in battle, she wanted to go too, due to ideas that I’ve instilled in her. Aragorn would tell her that her duty is to be with her people, and she would get defensive due to ideas that we have stung her with. If Éowyn could be as distracted as possible and pay attention to things that don’t actually matter, such as war and fighting and dying in battle, she would be led to a life of destruction. Rejoice!

See, Aragorn’s point was really that he doesn’t exactly have what he wants either. As Éowyn wanted to fight and die in battle (and not to mention she had at least a little crush on Aragorn), Aragorn truly wanted to be in Rivendell had he not had to fight against my servants but we all have our responsibilities that we have to do that we don’t necessarily desire. I twisted her mind and added gender roles to the mix. Thus, we shoved her further into the cage that she’d feared, and Wormtongue’s job was to maintain the momentum. We convinced her that her role is inferior to the roles of the warriors, and that the warriors are the ones with the real jobs, while her job is inferior mainly because of her being female.

Fast forward to now. We had Éowyn disguise herself as a man, Dernhelm, as we have instilled a fear of a cage in her. She took Merry as he wanted to follow his friends but Théoden refused. They didn’t want to wait. Our Enemy’s plan for the Witch-King to be defeated would be thwarted by the resulting lack of patience as we have convinced them that they need to be in battle, all the time, in order to receive what they wanted, Merry to follow his friends and Éowyn to get the honor and glory she had desired.

So we added more distractions. We also convinced her that she couldn’t fight the Witch-King as who she is, convincing her she needed to disguise herself as Dernhelm first. We don’t want her to defeat the Witch-King of Angmar! That will obviously get the Witch-King killed, and she won’t want to continue fighting anymore! We instilled in her a focus on being a soldier, by giving her a self-destructive mindset that says that the only way for her to achieve the glory that she needs is to fight in battle and die in honor. This was what the people of Rohan, her hometown, seemed to believe.

They are on their way to battle, and so are we! We have more forces, and are much stronger than Éowyn and Merry. But don’t let up! The Witch-king will defend himself greatly as well. He was almost able to turn Frodo into a wraith!

Your master,

Melkor Morgoth
